Pepper is a Mustang, born in 1996. Because he came with the farm, not much is known about him. Shortly after the founders of Fawn Hills moved in and started caring for Pepper they learned that he has Cushings Disease. This disease occurs when a tumor develops in the pituitary gland. As this tumor slowly grows, it sends inappropriate signals to the rest of the body to secrete excessive hormones — primarily a stress hormone called cortisol. Too much cortisol can affect the body negatively in many different ways. Horses with Cushings are more prone to laminitis (a painful foot condition), excess hair growth, and dangerous infections. Pepper has been on medication since 2015 and is doing great!
